Tell me more about …

Wouldn’t it be great to slow down Ageing & increase Longevity?

Unfortunately we cannot stop ageing,  but the question is how can we can help slow it down?

Have you noticed your body changing not just by  appearance but also internally?

  • Your digestion of food is less efficient?
  • Food tastes different?
  • Taking Medications causing malabsorption of nutrients & side effects?

Our skin and physique are a good reflection of what is happening beneath the surface

Here are some symptoms of ageing on your body;

Cardio Vascular System; reduced performance, 50% less blood pumped around the body, blood pressure rises

Digestive System – stomach digestive enzymes decrease with age thus we dont digest out food properly

Nervous System – changes in our brain/ cognition

Hearing – the higher frequencies are lost, making it difficult to differentiate between voices and noise.

Sensory Impairment –  taste, smell, reflexes and pain alter.

Skin – Loss of elasticity from a decline in elastin & collagen

Endocrine system – Hormone imbalances, due to Adrenals, Thyroid, Sex hormones, along with hunger & appetite hormones like insulin.

Skeletal system – Bones loose calcium, becoming brittle, Osteoporosis is common, especially in women after menopause

Respiratory System – Vital capacity & total amount of air expelled diminishes, due to stiffness of rib cage and the muscles surrounding it.

Kidneys – Filtering of waste from the body via the urine is less efficient.

Environmental and Lifestyle factors effect every cell of our body;

  • UV rays; damaging DNA of skin cells, causing thinning of the skin, sun spots, wrinkles, dryness & itching
  • Stress; causing the age-accelerating hormones cortisol into over production.
  • Lack of Sleep; shorten the length of the telomeres on our DNA (cell time-keepers)
  • Too little or Too much exercise; causing wear & tear on joints & muscles or losing lean muscle due to lack of use.
  • Consuming GMO foods; linked to aging and poor immune systems
  • Alcohol consumption; decreasing antioxidant activity
  • Overeating / Obesity; causing inflammation & cell damage oxidative stress
  • Pesticides/ herbicides, pollution, toxic chemicals; increase aging of the skin
  • Over consumption of Over the Counter Medications; accelerate aging

Being aware of these factors is the first step in preventing accelerated ageing, implementing good nutrition, healthy balanced lifestyle factors and the use of quality natural supplements is the key to slowing down this process.

Mitochondrial Dysfunction

Constantly Fatigued?

Ageing prematurely?

Constant aching Muscles?

What are Mitichondria?

They are tiny structures located within nearly all cells of the body,  responsible for creating energy, by generating adenosine triphosphate (ATP), an essential “fuel” that drives all of the body’s functions.  Known as the “powerhouse” of the cell.

Symptoms of Mitochondrial Disease?

  • Poor growth
  • Muscle weakness, regular muscle pain, low muscle tone, exercise intolerance
  • Vision and/or hearing problems
  • Learning disabilities, delays in development, mental retardation
  • Autism & autism-like features
  • Heart, liver or kidney diseases
  • Gastrointestinal Disorders, swallowing difficulties, constipation, diahorrea, unexplained vomiting, cramping, reflux
  • Diabetes
  • Increased risk of infection
  • Neurological problems, seizures, migraines, strokes
  • Movement disorders
  • Thyroid problems
  • Respiratory (breathing) problems
  • Lactic acidosis (a buildup of lactate)
  • Dementia

Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment – HBOT

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy ‘HBOT’, involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurised room or tube.

It is a well-established treatment for decompression sickness, a hazard of scuba diving.

Other conditions treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy include;

  • Serious infections
  • Bubbles of air in your blood vessels
  • Wounds that won’t heal as a result of diabetes or radiation injury.

In a hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber, the air pressure is increased to 3 X  higher than normal air pressure, under these conditions, your lungs can gather more oxygen than would be possible breathing pure oxygen at normal air pressure.

Your blood carries this oxygen throughout your body, helping fight bacteria and stimulate the release of substances called growth factors and stem cells, which promote healing.

Why does this work?

  • Your body’s tissues need an adequate supply of oxygen to function.
  • When tissue is injured, it requires even more oxygen to survive.

HBOT increases the amount of oxygen your blood can carry, which temporarily restores normal levels of blood gases and tissue function to promote healing and fight infection.

HBOT is used to treat several medical conditions, & medical institutions use it in different ways.

Your doctor may suggest HBOT if you have one of the following conditions:

  • Anemia, severe
  • Brain abscess
  • Bubbles of air in your blood vessels (arterial gas embolism)
  • Burn
  • Decompression sickness
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Crushing injury
  • Deafness, sudden
  • Gangrene
  • Infection of skin or bone that causes tissue death
  • Nonhealing wounds, such as a diabetic foot ulcer
  • Radiation injury
  • Skin graft or skin flap at risk of tissue death
  • Vision loss, sudden and painless

Evidence is insufficient to support claims that HBOT can effectively treat the following conditions:

  • AIDS/HIV
  • Allergies
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Arthritis
  • Asthma
  • Autism
  • Bell’s palsy
  • Brain injury
  • Cancer
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Cirrhosis
  • Depression
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Gastrointestinal ulcers
  • Heart disease
  • Heatstroke
  • Hepatitis
  • Migraine
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Sports injury
  • Stroke

Addictive & Disordered Eating

Disordered eating refers to a wide range of abnormal eating behaviours, that can have a negative impact on a person’s emotional, social and physical wellbeing, lead to malnutrition, fatigue, poor concentration, and social issues leading to anxiety and depression & ultimately loss of Quality of Life

If you feel you can identify with any of the following?

  • Extreme Dieting
  • Anorexia Nervosa
  • Binge eating
  • Bulimia Nervosa (Purging)
  • Skipping meals regularly
  • Obsessive calorie counting
  • Orthorexia (obsession with only healthy food)
  • Misusing laxatives and or diuretics
Treatment

Admitting that you need help and need to learning to have a good relationship with food and have a balanced satisfying, healthy food intake can be a difficult step to take.

Treatment is an individual journey, what works for one person may not for another. The main components of professional treatment for disordered eating involve; physical & nutritional assessment and management of mental health.

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia, affecting about 70% of people with dementia.

Dementia is a Syndrome not a Disease

Alzheimer’s is a Disease that falls under the Syndrome

It can be hereditary/familial or Sporadic;
Familial Alzheimer’s is a rare genetic condition, caused by a mutation in one of your genes, which will cause you to develop Alzheimer’s in your 40’s or 50’s.
Sporadic Alzheimer’s can affect adults at any age, but usually will develop after 65.

The outer layer of the brain shrinks was we age, (due to cell death, which can be detected during an MRI). The outer part of the brain is the first area to be affected by the disease and is the region of the brain involved with memory, language and judgement.

Short term memory loss (STM) is the first symptom of Alzheimer’s, eventually followed by long term memory (LTM). The rate of progression varies from person to person.

Symptoms include;

  • Persistent and frequent memory difficulties especially STM
  • Vagueness in conversations
  • Loss of enthusiasm for usual activities
  • Taking longer to complete normal tasks
  • Forgetting names, people and places
  • Loss of ability to process instructions and answer questions
  • Social skills deteriorate
  • Changing emotions
Treatment

A clinical diagnosis should be made to eliminate other possible conditions such as nutritional deficiencies or depression. There is no cure for Alzheimer’s Disease, although conventional medicine offers some drugs to provide temporary relief.

There has been extensive research done in many natural therapies that have proven to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s but reducing the formation of the plaques that attack and kill brain cells.

Asthma

Asthma is chronic inflammatory and complex immune disorder of the airways, which reacts to triggers causing flare-ups. During a flare-up the muscles around the airways squeeze tight, swell up becoming narrow, making it difficult to get enough air inside the lungs restricting normal breathing. A sudden or severe flare-up is called an ‘Asthma Attack’.

Symptoms often occur at night, early morning or after physical activity include;

  • Breathlessness
  • Wheezing
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Constant dry coughing

Asthma severity is defined by the intensity of treatment required to achieve good asthma control, common triggers include;

  • House dust mites
  • Feathers
  • Animal dander
  • Exercise
  • Pollens
  • Smoke
  • Cold air
  • Food preservatives

Diagnosis and Investigations are important to rule out any differential diagnosis, this is done by Chest x-rays, allergy testing, lung function test and in severe cases arterial blood gas and oxygen saturation levels.

Treatment

Medications used in asthma treatment are divided into 2 classes; quick relief used in acute situations like Ventolin (puffers), and corticosteroids for long-term control used to prevent the onset of an attack. Ventolin which dilates the airways to allow more air to flow.

Prevention of exposure to airborne allergens is the best way to avoid asthma attacks, there are also other lifestyle and natural supplements and alternative treatments that can support the lungs to alleviate some of the symptoms.

Please make an appointment to receive further information on natural treatment options.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic illness characterized by a combination of chronic, widespread musculoskeletal pain and tenderness. The most commonly affected are women aged between 20 and 50. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome(CFS) can occur along with Fibromyalgia

Common symptoms include;

  • Muscle pain due to metabolic changes in muscle cells.
  • Extreme Fatigue from poor nutrient conversion to energy
  • Sleep disturbance due to pain
  • Continued muscle stiffness
  • Cognitive dysfunction
  • Depression/Anxiety
  • Headaches

  • IBS; Irritable bowel symptoms

It is thought to be triggered by chronic stress or inflammation, although there is a genetic predisposition, early life trauma, abuse, viral infections (Glandular Fever) and immune dysregulation.

There can also be a history of and a co-existence of autoimmune conditions present eg. Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriasis.

There is unfortunately no definitive blood test to diagnose fibromyalgia, although it is generally accepted when 5 key domains are present;

  • Pain in 11 out of 18 tender points palpated all over the body
  • Fatigue
  • Waking unrefreshed
  • Cognitive symptoms (such and anxiety, depression and insomnia)
  • Somatic symptoms (such as noise and light sensitivity, muscle weakness, headache, numbness, tingling, dizziness, blurred vision, dry mouth, itching, ringing in ears, oral ulcers, loss of appetite, bruising, frequent or painful urination, hair loss)
Treatment

This condition is not always recognized by conventional GP’s, but is treated with muscle relaxants, antidepressants or anticonvulsants.

Natural treatments include dietary changes and the implementation of nutritional supplements, minerals, vitamins and herbs which can very effectively reduce the pain, inflammation and cellular damage and assist the power house in cells to begin working properly again, allowing for a noticeable increase in energy levels.

Building a resilient ‘Immune System’

Our Immune system is built to protect us against the effects of microbe pathogens (germs), that we face on a daily basis, as well as react against foreign substances and cancer cells. A healthy functioning immune system is crucial to overall health & wellbeing and is a complex ‘system’ not a single entity, to function well it requires balance & harmony.

First line of defence is to choose a healthy lifestyle, which will protect you from environmental assaults, bolstered by healthy strategies;

  • Good regular nourishment
  • Don’t smoke
  • Exercise regularly, at least 20-30 minutes a day
  • Maintain a healthy weight range (BMI 20-24)
  • Keep your blood pressure under control
  • Drink alcohol in moderation
  • Get adequate quality sleep
  • Be responsible in infection control (wash hands regularly)

Nutrition is a critical determinant of immune responses and malnutrition is the most common cause of immunodeficiency worldwide. Protein-energy malnutrition is associated with a significant impairment of our immune system, along with over nutrition and obesity, low birth weight of infants and the ageing.

Evidence of micro nutrient deficiencies in certain vitamins and minerals can alter our immune responses.

Do you suffer with Head Aches & Migraines?

Migraines

Are a type of throbbing headache that is accompanied by sensitivity to sound & light, nausea, vomiting and usually more on one side of the head. It is inflammation triggering pain due to changes in nerve activity and blood flow to the brain.

The real cause is unknown but can be an inherited condition, and affect more women than men, and it has been researched that sex hormones play a part in this. Which would explain why they occur around the time of menstruation.

It is important to identify triggers to minimise onset and impact, these can be;
Food; Alcohol, caffeine, sugar, preservatives
Environment; Computers, loud music, florescent lights, strong odours, chemical smells, changes in air pressure
Physiological; Stress, exercise, insomnia, hormones, blood pressure, skipping meals

Treatment

There is no one cure for migraines, but there a few factors proven to reduce the duration severity and frequency of the attacks, without using powerful drugs.

There are also many alternative, complimentary therapies which have been shown to help, that we can recommend.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome – PCOS

Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a group of symptoms

It is the most common endocrine disorder of women of productive age, between 5-10% of women are affected, 400,000 women in Australia alone. It is a heterogeneous condition (not carried by both parents), caused by environmental and genetic factors.

Insulin resistance obesity and metabolic syndrome are significant features of PCOS, along with dysfunctional ovary, adrenal and the thyroid gland.

What is Insulin Resistance…?

  • The body produces a hormone called insulin when glucose is released into the blood stream after eating a carbohydrate rich meal.
  • Normally insulin would trigger glucose to be taken into the cells to be used as energy.
  • Being resistant to insulin causes your body to increase glucose in the blood to a dangerously high level.
  • This can lead to…
    • Brain fogginess
    • High blood sugar & Triglyceride levels
    • High Blood Pressure
    • Inflammation / Cardio Vascular Disease
    • Depression
    • Intestinal bloating
    • Tiredness after eating meals
    • Weight gain, difficulty losing weight/ Increased continuous hunger

Symptoms of PCOS include;

  • Hiruitism (excessive hair growth on the face, chest, abdomen, etc.)
  • Hair loss (androgenic alopecia, in a classic “male baldness” pattern)
  • Acne
  • Polycystic ovaries (seen on ultrasound)
  • Obesity (28% of women, which a BMI over 35) SEE BMI CHART below
  • Infertility or reduced fertility
  • Irregular or absent menstrual period
  • Deepening of the voice
  • Dark or thick skin markings and creases around the armpits, groin, neck, and breasts due to insulin sensitivity
Treatment

Clinical Assessment is necessary to investigate and diagnose PCOS, with an Ultrasound being the last step.

PCOS cannot be ‘cured’ or eliminated, the aim is to improve insulin sensitivity as an initial step toward regulating ovulation, its cycle and androgen levels.

Medication subscribed by conventional doctors include Metformin, which has some side effects which need to be managed.

Adequate management of insulin resistance requires changes to diet & lifestyle, these we can address with some natural supplements.

Carbohydrate & Sugar Addiction

“Food Addiction” seems plausible because brain pathways that evolved to respond to natural rewards are also activated by addictive drugs.

Sugar is noteworthy as substance that releases opioids and dopamine, thus have a potential addictive effect.

Each day Australians consume over 20 teaspoons of sugar (5g x 20 = 100g), not only does it make us gain weight but it affecting dental hygiene and contributing to insulin resistance and the development of Type 2 Diabetes.

Obesity rates continue to climb, World Health Organisation tell us 1.9 billion people worldwide are overweight, 600 million, of those considered Obese.

Excess sugar consumption has been proven to contribute to weight gain, the more consumed the lower dopamine levels become leading to a higher consumption to get the same reward.

Research has found as well as weight gain, maintaining an extremely high sugar consumption and binge eating into adulthood causes neurological and psychiatric consequences affecting mood and motivation.

FDA have approved a nicotine addiction medication to treat sugar addiction because it works on the same principles.

Withdrawal of chronic sugar abuse and reducing sugar has the same effect as going ‘cold turkey’ as would a drug addict, therefore is seen as a psychological dependency like gambling not just a biochemical addiction.

Treatment

Treating constant sugar cravings so achievable and there are many ways to tame and take control of them. Changing and challenging those habits and behaviours naturally, with time, you can wean yourself off  optimising your daily health and moods. Improvement can be seen with good support by balancing the body’s intake of vital nutrients, energy levels and neurotransmitter signals.

Please make an appointment to receive further information on natural treatment options.

Sleep Problems

Sleep is vital to good health, and getting enough quality sleep at the right times can help in the prevention of mental and physical health, quality of life and safety throughout the day.

Quality helps our brains function properly, during sleep our brains form new pathways to help with learning and storing our memories.

Mental effects of poor sleep include;

  • Poor decision making & problem solving
  • Lack of creativity
  • Lack motivation
  • Inability to control emotions & behaviour
  • Cause moodiness / depression / anxiety

Physical effects include;

  • Poor healing and repair of heart & blood vessels
  • Poor development & growth as a child.
  • Increased heart & kidney disease
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Risk of diabetes, Stroke
  • Very high risk of Obesity
  • Low energy

Sleep is also essential to balance our hormones especially the hunger hormone ‘Ghrelin’ and the feeling full hormone ‘Leptin’.

When we don’t get enough sleep the Ghrelin hormones goes up (feel hungry more), and the ‘Leptin’ goes down, so we never feel full, thus over eat and gain unwanted fat.

Leptin Resistance is a precursor to Diabetes 2, this is because lack of sleep affects the way our body reacts to another hormone Insulin, this one controls our blood glucose levels.

Lack of sleep results in normal blood sugar levels increasing, leading to Diabetes type 2, obesity and conditions like PCOS in women.

For more information, contact us for an appointment.

Treatment

Certain foods can sabotage our sleep along with bad lifestyle habits, therefore analysing your pre bedtime pattern and looking at nutrients consumed during the day and pre bedtime is a good way of improving a good night sleep, this is called ‘Sleep Hygiene’.There are numerous beneficial, natural supplements which can help enhance the quality of your sleep without resorting to drugs, which can have after effects the next day and leave you feeling groggy and unable to function.

Please make an appointment to receive further information on natural treatment options.

Obesity & Weigh Loss

Being Overweight & Obese are widely recognised as one of Australia’s leading health concerns involving all ages and socioeconomic groups, and a strongly association with several chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease, cancers, type 2 diabetes, mental health & eating disorders.

The causes of obesity and being overweight are complex, and although diet and physical activity are central to energy balance. Iit is also directly and indirectly influenced by a wide range of social, environmental, behavioural, genetic and physiological factors.

Common factors which may be inhibiting your ability to lose weight or cause you to gain weight;

  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Stress Hormones
  • Lack of Vitamin D
  • Lack or Quality sleep
  • Hormonal Imbalances (leptin resistance, Insulin resistance, menopause, PCOS, andropause)
  • Neurotransmitter dysfunction
  • Lack of exercise, fibre or water intake
  • Allergies & food intolerances
  • Poor detoxification (liver dysfunction)

Leptin; produced by the fat tissue is supposed to increase when there is an abundance of fat … reducing the desire to eat. If levels decrease, then the desire to eat increases.

Ghrelin; is opposite of Leptin,

Endorphins; are a natural body tranquiliser that can prompt you to eat

Serotonin; is released as a result of consuming a high carbohydrate meal, high levels decrease desire to eat carbohydrates eg. become tired.

Another consideration in weight loss resistance is your gut microbiome, because the bacteria and other microbes that live in your gastrointestinal tract may also be playing a significant role in obesity.

These microbes play an important role in how we get nutrients and calories from our food and how we burn them for energy. Some studies have shown that potentially the gut microbiome affects fat storage and ability to get energy from food. Different ratios of key bacteria and alterations in the genes of bacteria could play a role in how many calories you can get from food. Some bacteria might even be linked to more efficient food metabolism.

There are many facts that can be taken into account and reasons which maybe explain the inability to lose weight successfully, when attempting to lose weight, without starving yourself, taking over the counter preparations with false promises or adopting unsustainable eating habits.

Inflammation

What do heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, arthritis, sinusitis, allergies, asthma, gout, IBS all have in common?

ALL ASSOCIATED WITH INFLAMMATION

Leading researchers from all areas of medicine have independently and repeatedly come to the same conclusion, that INFLAMMATION plays a key role in the development of a variety of seemingly unrelated illness.

It is recognized as the common link that explains the association between many different conditions. It is the way our body reacts to injury or infection

Did you know there is an association between;

Asthma & Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS))

Heart Attacks & Dental Problems

Gout & Heart Disease

Allergies & Diabetes

They are all related by the presence of INFLAMMATION

How do we know if we have inflammation?

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Warmth

Some inflammation is silent and can take a blood test to diagnose, this done with a test for C-Reactive protein (CRP), this can identify systemic inflammation eg Rheumatoid arthritis.

Conventional treatment for inflammation is to administer anti-inflammatory medications (NSAID’s) eg. Ibuprofen. Continued consumption of these can have serious side effects, like nausea, stomach irritation, damaging kidneys and liver.

Preventative treatments to control inflammation through an anti-inflammatory diet and natural supplements can reduce symptoms substantially without damaging side effects.

Depression, Anxiety, Mental Illnesses

Depression & Anxiety are common but different conditions, and is not uncommon for both to occur together, and is the leading cause of disability on a Global scale, in Australia alone it is estimated 45% of people will at stage in the lifetime experience mental health issues.

Depression is not just feeling sad, moody or low from time to tie, it is an intense feeling for weeks, months or years, physical signs include;

  • Tired all the time
  • Sick and run down
  • Headaches & muscle pains
  • Stomach churning all the time
  • Sleep problems
  • Loss or change of appetite
  • Major weight Loss or gain

Anxiety is not just feeling stressed or worried, but when those feelings never subside, are ongoing with no apparent stressors, making it hard to cope with everyday life and normal functioning. These manifest;

  • Physically; panic attacks, hot or cold flushes, racing heart beats, tightening in the chest, breathing quickly, feeling tense, edgy.
  • Psychologically; excessive fear, worrying, catastrophizing or obsessive thinking.
  • Behaviourally; avoidance of situations that cause you stress or feeling anxious, impacting on work, or socialising.

Lifestyle choices can have a significant effect on mental health, poor choices can aggravate the symptoms associated with both anxiety & depression, so making positive changes can speed up recovery, like avoiding excessive caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes, social isolation, toxic relationships.

Causes of depressive disorders include;

  • Nutrient insufficiency when the brain is starved of essential enzymes to promote a balance of healthy neurotransmitters.
  • Seasonal affective disorder, (SAD) can affect those people indoors, during winter when the spend most of the time under false light, lack of exposure to the sun
  • Metabolic disorders like PKU
  • Certain medications can alter brain chemistry
  • Lack of sleep
  • Genetics
Treatment

Conventional medicine often treats depression with certain types of antidepressants SNRI’s, SSRI’s, MAOI’s, Tricyclics, along with participating in psychotherapy, which is a key component to understand the problem. These types of drugs have their own unpleasant side effects to then deal with. Other natural vital treatments can include reducing stress, making lifestyle changes, addressing sleep issues, consuming foods rich in certain nutrients, which have all shown to have substantial benefits in reducing depressive & anxiety symptoms.

Please make an appointment to receive further information on natural treatment options.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)

CFS is also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis ME, which is a severe debilitating condition that incorporates many physiological, neurological & psychiatric.

Symptoms including;

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Severe fatigue, especially after exercise
  • Abnormal immune responses
  • Digestive problems, lack or appetite
  • Memory & cognitive problems
  • Muscle/ joint pain
  • Constant sore throat
  • Hypersensitivity to light & sound
  • Difficulty regulating body temperature
  • Tinnitus
  • Vertigo
  • Emotional/ mood changes.

Not all patients suffer with these symptoms, but the only/main diagnosis is based on severe disabling fatigue for over 6 months.

There is also spectrum severity of symptoms, from Mild Burnout to CFS and there is a broad overlap between CFS & Fibromyalgia, panic-anxiety disorder, IBS and atypical depression, Dysthymia, type of long term depression characterised by low energy, self-esteem, concentration & insomnia.

There is a lot of debate as to whether CFS is a ‘real’ illness or is psychological hence the debate Psychiatric vs Organic.

CFS & burnout are both associated with and underactive part of the brain ‘HPA axis’, the body’s main stress regulatory system, this under functioning of HPA is also seen in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder PTSD.

Treatment

It is important to get emotional support as well as treat the symptoms. Although there is no cure, conventional medicine treats it with antidepressants, pain killers and anti-inflammatory drugs. These all have their own side effects to contend with.

Complementary medicine recomend, an holistic approach, including lifestyle & nutritional support along with quality supplements to improve debilitating symptoms.

Gut Health

The gastrointestinal tract (GIT)/ Digestive System, encompasses not just our stomach but starts from …..

Mouth > Oesophagus > Stomach > Small Intestine > Large Intestine

The overall function is to break down the food we eat into smaller macro & micro nutrients to be further absorbed and utilised by the body to maintain optimum health and free from disease. Different nutrients being broken down and absorbed in different areas of these 4 parts of GIT.

‘Gut Health’ is a term used by the medical & food industry to denote effective digestion and absorption of food, the absence of gastrointestinal illness, normal intestinal microbiota, effective immune status and a general state of optimal wellbeing.

An impairment to the gastrointestinal barrier can increase the risk of developing infectious, inflammatory and functional GI diseases, as well external intestinal diseases such as immune regulated metabolic disorders.

There are over 100 trillion bacteria that call our intestines home, otherwise known as ‘gut flora’, ‘gut microbiome’ or ‘gut microbiota’

While new discoveries are being made almost daily, some of the key findings are strong links to our immune system – in fact, 70-80 per cent of our immune tissue resides in our digestive system.

Therefore, it is crucial to have a good gut microbiome to have a fully functioning immune response and be less prone to pathogen infection.

Also key is the role gut microbes play in regulating the degree of inflammation in the human body, with inflammation linked to such diseases as Alzheimer’s, coronary artery disease, diabetes and cancer.

Another recent finding is that an incorrect balance or absence of certain bacteria has been linked to an inability to lose weight or maintain weight loss. Also the strong link between our gut and our brains, with implications in depression and dysfunctional mental health.

Neurotransmitters are produced in our gut, 90% of our serotonin comes from the gut thus impacting on our moods.

Treatment

If you have used antibiotics, eat processed food regularly or are experiencing any gut discomfort, mood changes, depression or allergies it is vital to improve the microbiome in your gut, with pre and probiotics and certain foods to improve gut integrity and improve your immune system

Adrenal Fatigue / Hypercortisolemia

Adrenal fatigue is a collection of signs and symptoms, known as a syndrome

This occurs when the adrenal glands (which sit on top of the kidneys), function below the necessary level, but  commonly associated with intense or prolonged stress, or after acute or chronic infections, especially respiratory infections such as influenza, bronchitis or pneumonia.

As the name suggests, its predominant symptom is fatigue that is not relieved by sleep or rest, but it is not a readily identifiable entity. You may look and feel relatively normal with adrenal fatigue and may not have any obvious signs of physical illness, yet you live with a general sense of un-wellness, constantly tiredness or “down” feeling.

People experiencing adrenal fatigue often have to use coffee, sugary drinks and other stimulants like cigarettes, alcohol or drugs, to get going in the morning and to prop themselves up during the day. These are only short term solutions and eventually they have a disastrous effect on your long term health, not to mention not addressing and treating the real issue.

Stresses are something we all live with every day and we should have strategies in place to cope with them, depending on how severe they are, or ultimately they will have damaging effects on our general wellbeing physiologically and psychologically.
